The renal cell carcinoma, known also as hypernephroma and Grawitz tumor, is one of the present-day entities replacing syphilis as a medical enigma. Nineteen patients had a single lesion metastatic to the brain, and 16 of these lesions were supratentorial. Despite the fact that there is nothing new to present on the subject of metastasis in hypernephroma, nevertheless it seems worth while that a modest review be made of the wide-spread nature of such metastases in order to draw attention to possible errors in diagnosis and treatment. Metastatic hypernephroma has been notoriously resistant to control by conventional methods of therapy. A review of 72 patients treated by various methods revealed that patients in whom metastases recurred 18 months or longer after initial diagnosis had a median survival of almost 15 months; those patients in whom metastases recurred less than 18 months after diagnosis had a median survival of about 8 months. The renal cell carcinoma (formerly hypernephroma) comprises approx. 85% of all malignant kidney tumors.
